Yellowstone may be coming to an end, but Taylor Sheridan’s Dutton universe continues to grow with multiple spin-offs, including an upcoming second season of 1923.

The series stars Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford and follows an earlier generation of Duttons, serving as both a prequel to the Yellowstone main series and a sequel to the previous Yellowstone spin-off 1883.

Paramount confirmed the second season ahead of the finale of season one earlier this year, but there have been a number of complications behind the scenes which could delay the release date.

With that in mind, read on for everything you need to know about when the second season of 1923 could land.

Nothing is confirmed about the release date for 1923 season 2, and things haven't exactly been going smoothly.

Back in July, KXLF reported that 1923 season 2 would not be using the Butte Civic Center in Butte, Montana, as a sound stage going forward.

This was due to production delays and the Hollywood writers' and actors' strikes meaning that the show would not have been ready to start filming in November as agreed upon.

"They just could not build everything, be ready to film before November," centre manager Bill Melvin said, adding: "They had lost the timing of that."

When production does resume, the show will need to find a new sound stage.

The prequel received the renewal news in February 2023.

Pre-production on season 1 started in July 2022, with the first episode airing on Paramount Plus in December 2022.

The series has broken records since premiering, becoming one of the most-watched series premieres on cable in the US in 2022, as well as debuting to a slew of positive reactions.

1923 season 2 cast: Who will be returning?

1923 has most certainly taken us on a rollercoaster with the characters in this prequel series. Not only has there been family drama in droves, there's also been surprise deaths aplenty.

So, it's safe to say that the initial 1923 cast may not make it into season 2, seeing as the season 1 finale is sure to throw up some unexpected curveballs.

While Paramount Plus has not yet officially released any details on the cast, it's safe to assume that many of the key players will likely return to season 2. The main cast for 1923 are as follows:

  • Helen Mirren as Cara Dutton
  • Harrison Ford as Jacob Dutton
  • Sebastian Roché as Father Renaud
  • Darren Mann as Jack Dutton
  • Michelle Randolph as Elizabeth Strafford
  • Aminah Nieves as Teonna Rainwater
  • Brandon Sklenar as Spencer Dutton
  • Robert Patrick as Sheriff William McDowell
  • Jerome Flynn as Banner Creighton
  • Timothy Dalton as Donald Whitfield

Ford confirmed he’ll definitely be back for the upcoming instalment, telling the Today show back in February: "The idea of not working doesn't make much sense to me. It's really where I feel most alive."

Mirren likewise told Deadline that the news of a second season was "very happy news as far as I was concerned".

She continued: "I’m fascinated to see where Cara is going to go. Taylor did say she is very much of her era, she’s looking after the house. That is what her job is. But then he said, 'Wait, things are going to happen.' So we’ll see."

As for the cast members we know that definitely won't be returning, those will be the mass of characters who have died...

Those include Catherine Walsh (Alexandra Grossi), Kagiso (Raymond Watanga), Bob Strafford (Tim DeKay), John Dutton Sr (James Badge Dale), Sister Mary (Jennifer Ehle), Sister Alice (Kerry O'Malley), Baapuxti (Leenah Robinson), Emma Dutton (Marley Shelton), Captain Lucca (Peter Stormare) and Issaxche (Amelia Rico).

1923 season 2 plot: What could happen?

Details about season 2 have been kept firmly under wraps for now, with nothing really known about the upcoming season, aside from the fact that it will continue the Dutton family saga.

Season 1 has focused on exploring this new generation of the Dutton family. As per the synopsis, the show will: "Explore the early 20th century when pandemics, historic drought, the end of Prohibition, and the Great Depression all plague the mountain west, and the Duttons who call it home."

We can only assume that we pick back up after the dramatic events of the season 1 finale, entitled Nothing Left to Lose.

Michelle Randolph, who plays Elizabeth 'Liz' Strafford, previously teased in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that she's "happy" about season 2, stating that "there’s a lot of loose ends to tie up".
